I’ve always been super passionate about art. I believe that art affects human understanding and interpretation of the world. Art is one of the most important ways people tell us how they view the world. Through art people can express what they are feeling when words fall short and convey an entire story without saying a word. Art was the first means of communication and it is universal. It is art that connects us with the rest of the world and connects us with ourselves. Art allows us to take what we see and feel and put it into something others can see and feel too.
It is my goal as an art educator to teach students about the many aspects of what art truly is. Art is not only the production of a work, it is understanding why we feel the need to make it, why others before us needed to create it, what techniques we used to construct it, and why it pleases our eyes after we have finished it. Students should be able to practice art in the following ways: production, fundamentals, aesthetics, exhibiting, observing and studying cultures and the history of art, as well as the artists that created the works. Bringing other subjects into works and techniques of art and sending art back into those subjects is also something that I would love to integrate into my classrooms. These mutually beneficial relationships would help to advocate for all subjects.
Students are able to learn more effectively when materials are meaningful and relevant to their life and interests. Children have an inherent ability for creating art. It is important to look at the students’ concerns, their creative play and imaginative collection to make art lessons student-centered. Students’ experiences must be valued and built upon. Developing an art curriculum around students’ interests fosters intrinsic motivation and stimulates the passion to learn. When students have ownership in the curriculum, they are motivated to work hard and master the skills necessary to reach their goals. Moreover, constantly engaging students to accept new challenges may help them to develop their potential abilities. Art education encourages the ability to value oneself and others, and to approach the world with a desire to understand.
In addition to the academic skills of art, it is also essential for students to understand the importance of being respectful to all things and all people, including themselves. Generally, students have greater respect for their teachers, their peers, and the lessons presented when they feel safe and sure of what is expected from them. Equally important to respect is being responsible for their own actions especially false actions. As teachers, we need to set up good examples for the students to follow.
Art needs to be taught by a person who is passionate, knowledgeable and outgoing in creating, teaching and appreciating art. An educator cannot teach something effectively if they do not love it. Students will learn more from someone who is enthusiastic about the subject they are teaching. One of my hopes when I eventually become an educator is to instill a love of art in all students through my own passion. It is important for students to not only receive a solid education but to work with someone who is aware of and sensitive to their needs. I am such a person and will always strive to be the best educator that I can be.
